A businessman based in Chesumei, Nandi County has been arrested for being in possession of 200,000 pieces of Supermatch cigarettes with a customs value of Kshs 4 million meant for export.

Kevin Kibet was found in possession of the uncustomed goods at his residence in Amea area within Chesumei Sub County. Police officers from Kapsabet Police Station arrested him after upon receipt of intelligence that he was in possession of the goods meant for export contrary to the East Africa Community Customs Management Act, 2004. Officers from KRA confirmed that indeed no duties had been paid for the goods.

The suspect, who appeared before Kapsabet Law Courts Principal Magistrate Hon. John Aringo denied the charges of being in possession of uncustomed goods and was released on cash bail of Kshs. 50,000. The case shall be heard on 18th December, 2023.

In the same court, Daniel Ruto who was arraigned for being in possession of 1,205 bottles of Kingdom Vodka with a revenue implication of Kshs 300,000 smuggled from Uganda. He denied charges of smuggling imported goods and possession of excisable goods not affixed with excise stamps and was released on a bond of KShs 50,000. The case is set for hearing on 12th December, 2023. Ruto was arrested on 31st August, 2023 while transporting the goods in a private car.

KRA in a renewed campaign against illicit trade has seized illicit goods during various operations in different locations across the country including Nakuru, Nyeri, Nandi, Isiolo and Uasin Gishu Counties and remains steady in its fight against illicit trade.
