Three charged in Nakuru for smuggling sugar

Three people have been charged at Nakuru Law court for being in possession of and conveying of suspected smuggled sugar.

The suspects, Joseph Murunga Kibengo, Anthony Juma and Charles Oluochi were arraigned before Principal Magistrate Hon. Isaac Orenge where they denied the charges and were released on a bond of KShs. 300,000 with an alternative cash bail of KShs.150,000. The case will continue on 21st September 2021.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers arrested the three at Pipeline along Nakuru-Nairobi highway on 3rd September with 230 bags of sugar branded Mayuge Sugar Industries each weighing 50 kgs. The goods have a tax implication of KShs. 946,536.25.

Smuggling of goods into the country denies the government the much-needed revenue. KRA Investigation is aimed at detecting, disrupting and deterring smuggling of uncustomed goods into the country by syndicates and organized cartels in order to enhance revenue.
